Where Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic Lands on Latest NBA MVP Ladder

Of course, both Shai and Jokic have put together incredible seasons thus far and are both deserving of the MVP award. While that might be the case, only one can win the award, and Shai has remained as the frontrunner.

Shai has led the Thunder to a 44-10 record, which has them sitting at the top of the Western Conference standings and is also tied with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the best record in the NBA.

Jokic, on the other hand, has led Denver to a 36-19 record, which has them sitting third in the West standings, just half of a game behind the Memphis Grizzlies for the second seed. The Nuggets have also been the hottest team in the NBA over the past few weeks as they enter the All-Star break on an eight-game winning streak.

While Shai has had an incredible season thus far, Jokic is arguably putting together the best season of his already Hall of Fame-worthy career. This season, the 29-year-old big man is averaging 29.8 points, 12.6 rebounds, 10.2 assists and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 57.7% from the field and 45.0% from three-point range.

He currently ranks in the top four in points, rebounds and assists per game and leads the NBA with 25 triple-doubles, which already matches his total from last season. Jokic is also currently averaging a triple-double on the season and if he is able to continue to do so, he would join Russell Westbrook and Oscar Robertson as the only players to accomplish the feat in NBA history.

With these numbers, Jokic is clearly having another MVP-like season, but he will have to continue his great campaign if he wants to beat out Shai for the award.
