Chiefs aren’t spending Patrick Mahomes money where they should
The Kansas City Chiefs are waiting around a little too long for a Trent McDuffie extension, and there’s little more Patrick Mahomes can do to help.

The Kansas City Chiefs can ill-afford to play the waiting game. While KC has made some moves – albeit confusing – in free agency so far, they have yet to address one major need in-house. This is despite a favor from quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who along with star pass rusher Chris Jones provided the Chiefs with over $49 million of additional funds to work with.
Brett Veach has earned the right to take his time and operate without much second-guessing from pundits like myself. He and Andy Reid built a perennial contender and traded up for their franchise quarterback when few would’ve cashed such a lottery ticket on Mahomes. The Chiefs draft well, and they tend to keep the right players around. Unfortunately, the longer they wait on one player specifically, the less likely it is they are able to sign him long term. That player would be Trent McDuffie.

Texans put pressure on Chiefs to extend Trent McDuffie
The Houston Texans signed Derek Stingley Jr. to a record-breaking contract extension on Monday morning. The asking price for shutdown corners has gone up dramatically in just the past few weeks, and while the Chiefs would rather wait until later in the offseason to address such a pressing need, patience should come with a warning label based on what we’ve seen so far this March.
Stingley became the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL on Monday, signing a $90 million extension with $89 million guaranteed. The deal will pay Stingley close to $30 million per season, which surpasses the contract signed by Jaycee Horn of the Carolina Panthers, which will pay him $25 million AAV. Stingley Jr. allowed the second-lowest completion rate this season per Next Gen stats, and had a career year with five interceptions. He has earned his contract, but he will not remain the highest-paid cornerback for long.
Trent McDuffie could force Chiefs to alter their usual approach
While McDuffie is obviously not on the offensive side of the ball, he is one of the Chiefs greatest assets, as he helps get Mahomes the ball back as quickly as possible, and keeps the opposing offense off the field as a result of key pass breakups. He is rapidly emerging as one of the best cornerbacks in the AFC, and even if he doesn’t command Stingley Jr. money, his asking price will go up as does the market. That is not rocket science. Arrowhead Addict’s Matt Conner detailed the problem the Chiefs now face:

“Veach’s decision to wait, however, has now cost him in the long run. Stingley’s deal averages $30 million annually. It also blows away Jaycee Horn’s recent deal with the Carolina Panthers by $17 million guaranteed. There’s no way McDuffie’s representatives are going to go for a deal that doesn’t get the best of Stingley’s, which means that K.C. is going to have to climb higher than $30M in potential annual value at this rate,” Conner wrote.
As Conner notes, Veach traditionally likes to sign players to extensions after the NFL Draft, but McDuffie is not most players. The Chiefs are among the best franchises in the league at making adjustments on the fly. Now would be the right time to consider altering their usual approach, especially right after two of their franchise icons freed up money for that very reason.
Chiefs Offer Support to Patrick Mahomes’ $182M Investment Before Brittany Attended Opening Game With Kids

It’s the NFL off-season. One of the most popular signal callers, Patrick Mahomes, is using this time to chill and relax with his family. He has been smart with his money. After the Chiefdom cheered him for the Super Bowl, now, he will cheer up the players in whom he has invested: NWSL franchise KC Current. The Kansas hero is the co-owner and a supporter of his home state. Now, his team has also joined in.
On March 15, the Chiefs shared an Instagram post for the KC Current ahead of their 2025 season opener against Portland Thorns FC. With a photo of their signal caller, they also wished them luck with the caption, “𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩ly wishing good luck to @kccurrent as they kick off their season today! 🩵 #KCBABY” It marked the mutual love for all fans. Even the NWSL team replied with admiration for the NFL side, “Thank you, friends.”
A sea of red filled the CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 15. They even showed their dominance by winning with a 3-1 score. All 3 goals came in the first half. Mahomes would be happy as his $182 million investment was booming big. His wife became the co-owner first, later bringing him on-board as well. The club is gaining popularity. We know the Grim Reaper is a tremendous supporter.
In April last year, he raised the toast to a new era as he said, “An era when the women’s game is finally getting the attention it deserves. The real reason you should care about women’s sports is because they’re incredible.” His support has been ever present in the field. Last year, he watched their games with Brittany, Travis Kelce, and his billionaire girlfriend, Taylor Swift. It was a sweet moment to watch as all four cheered for the women’s team.

However, things have changed in his life. The Chiefs lost Super Bowl LIX against the Eagles. Travis Kelce is using this time to relax. However, Showtime even brought his children out to cheer for the girlies.
Patrick and Brittany Mahomes enjoy season opener with children
The KC Current also shared photos of the Mahomes family, with their daughter, Sterling and son, Bronze. All of them looked dapper, dressed in blue jackets. The couple even had matching blue jackets with black designs, with KC Current embroidered on the back. And as their team crushed their rivals, both cheered, laughing and enjoying the game.
They even captioned it aptly: “Our co-owners showing out for the home opener 😮💨 @patrickmahomes x @brittanylynne.” The crowd went crazy as they saw their favorite superstars on the big screen. For an instant, Patrick Mahomes was unrecognizable.

The signature long mohawk is now trimmed down, giving the fanbase a fresh look to take in. However, everyone warmly welcomed the couple, cheering for the women’s team. Even the children enjoyed the visit to the field, happily munching on chips.
A few days ago, the quarterback also celebrated Sterling’s fourth birthday, sharing photos of his daughter on Instagram and delighting fans. For millions of supporters across America, particularly in Kansas, it’s an exciting time as teams from different sports make their mark in their respective leagues.
Chiefs Should Have This Elite Weapon Targeted for Patrick Mahomes
The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to make some moves this offseason to put themselves in better position to get back to winning the Super Bowl in 2025.
After being blown out by the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl a month ago, the Chiefs clearly have more work to do.There will be significant free-agent losses, but adding to the offense could be of interest.

Kansas City has one of the best quarterbacks of all-time in Patrick Mahomes. While they have had good offenses over the last couple of years, they have not had the best weapons for him to work with.
Looking ahead to the 2025 season, the Chiefs would have Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy as their top wide receivers. Travis Kelce seems likely to be back as well.
They could look to add another weapon for Mahomes this offseason. How about Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp?

According to a report from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter earlier on Monday, the Rams are planning to release Kupp after the start of the new league year if they can’t find a trade for him.
In this scenario, Kansas City would wait for Los Angeles to release Kupp and then pursue him.
That is exactly what they should do.
Kupp would be a perfect addition for the Chiefs’ offense. He has had a few straight years with injury issues, but he has still produced at a solid level when he has been on the field.
During the 2024 season with the Rams, Kupp played in 12 games. He caught 67 passes for 710 yards and six touchdowns. Those are more than serviceable numbers.

Playing with a quarterback like Mahomes could help him get back to being a 1,000-yard wideout. His presence and ability to run elite routes could be lethal with Kansas City.
It’s possible that the Chiefs will have no interest in signing Kupp. However, it would be a wise decision for them to pursue him if he ends up hitting free agency.
One Move That Can Help the Chiefs’ Low Cap Situation
The Kansas City Chiefs could use some extra money to spend this offseason. There is an easy way to make it happen.

The Kansas City Chiefs have begun making offseason roster moves following a disappointing performance in the Super Bowl. With free agency gearing up, the Chiefs would like to add players to their roster but do not have much money to spend to do so.
The Chiefs have sustained one of the better rosters in the league, if not the best roster, for most of the past five seasons. Still, their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles confirmed they are no longer head and shoulders above every other team in the league and must improve.

Kansas City has the best quarterback in the league, Patrick Mahomes but they have hardly any cap space cleared to make significant additions in free agency. However, there are moves the Chiefs can make to help free up money to spend this summer.
Jared Dubin of CBS Sports analyzed the Chiefs’ cap situation and make a suggestion for how they can find the money to spend to bring in talent. Dubin thinks the Chiefs should consider restructuring Mahomes’ contract this summer, as it would free up a ton of money.
“Signing Trey Smith to a long-term deal instead of keeping him on the franchise tag would drop his cap hit pretty significantly. Patrick Mahomes has a whole bunch of money that could be spread out over the remaining years of his deal in the form of his base salary and a roster bonus, and the Chiefs could save as much as $39 million by doing that restructure,” Dubin said.

“It would not be surprising to see them move Kingsley Suamataia to guard and try to find a new left tackle in free agency. Especially if DeAndre Hopkins leaves, they’ll need depth at wide receiver. (Rashee Rice is coming back from a major injury and might get suspended.) They could also lose Tershawn Wharton, and they have a ton of other defensive linemen who are hitting free agency. They seem unlikely to retain Justin Reid, so linebacker and safety are needs as well.”
Kansas City undoubtedly must add to their roster, but they have to take the necessary steps to be able to do so.
Travis Kelce Says ‘Ew’ to Saquon Barkley’s New Incentive-Laden Contract
Travis Kelce isn’t a big fan of contract incentives.

Travis Kelce isn’t one to be shy about sharing his thoughts on a wide variety of topics.
On his podcast, New Heights, he and his brother Jason have opened up with their takes on everything from movies to the NFL rulebook and most everything in between.
On last week’s episode, the topic of conversation was Saquon Barkley’s new contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Obviously, the Kelce brothers come at any Eagles news from different perspectives—Jason retired as one of the greatest players in the history of the franchise, while Travis just lost to the Birds in the Super Bowl.
Both brothers were happy for Barkley after getting his new deal, but Travis light-heartedly criticized the amount of incentive money that was in the contract.
“Ew,” Travis said when Jason mentioned that $15 million of Barkley’s contract was in the form of incentives. “I don’t like that. I don’t like that one bit.”
Jason laughed off the line, with Travis quickly following up, saying “Does he have to get a 2,000-yard season every year? F—.”
The conversation begins around the 39:30 mark.
Jason explained that he regularly had incentives in his deals, including ones tied to being named as an All-Pro or Pro Bowler.
“So you have to rely on someone’s vote to get your incentive?” Travis asked. “Ew! Damn, that’s f—ed up.”
While Travis is right that it is kind of weird that some players’ income is determined in part by voters, it’s not all that uncommon across the league, and as both brothers noted, Barkley’s deal also came with $36 million guaranteed at signing, so it’s not like he’s being left out to dry by the team.
Also, after Barkley had one of the greatest seasons we’ve seen from a running back in recent memory, he has plenty of reason to be confident he can reach any incentive his contract asks of him.
Kansas City Chiefs get a new left tackle to protect Patrick Mahomes

NFL free agency has finally arrived. As of today, teams like the Kansas City Chiefs can begin negotiating contracts with any player without a contract for next season. To no surprise, the Chiefs got to work early, addressing their biggest need on Day One in free agency.

After witnessing Patrick Mahomes suffer a career-high six sacks in the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss, the front office had no choice but to find offensive line reinforcements. The biggest question mark was at left tackle, where now-traded Joe Thuney was playing by the end of the year instead of his more natural position as a left guard.
Well, now the Chiefs won’t have to force a player to change positions mid-season because they’ve signed a new left tackle at the outset of free agency.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Chiefs are signing former San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Jaylon Moore to a two-year, $30 million contract, with up to $21.24 million in guaranteed money.
Moore, 27, was a fifth-round selection by the 49ers in the 2021 NFL Draft. He’s appeared in 55 games but made just 12 starts. Now, he’s averaging $15 million per season, which projects him as an above-average starter. Based on his contract, Moore is now the projected starting left tackle in Kansas City, where he’ll be tasked with keeping Mahomes clean in the pocket.
