According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the Dallas Cowboys have agreed to a contract with punter Bryan Anger. The deal will span two years, keeping the key piece to the special teams unit in Dallas despite a new coaching staff coming in.
“The Cowboys will have their special teams battery together for another year with punter Bryan Anger agreeing to a two-year deal, per source,” Archer said via X. “Anger has averaged 49 yards per punt in four years with the Cowboys and has been named to the Pro Bowl twice.”
Anger has spent the last four seasons in Dallas and been one of the league’s best. Twice has he been named second-team All-Pro, most recently in 2023 when a Pro Bowl selection also occurred. As Archer mentioned, Anger is averaging 49 yards per punt with the Cowboys and hits 38.5% inside the 20-yard line.
Punter is one of those positions where they are not a welcomed sight on a football field. But when an inconsistent one is on the roster, the effects really begin to show. Anger brings a quality that is near the tops in the NFL and many underappreciate. Dallas will continue to have a true weapon on its hands over the next two seasons.
Cowboys continue to resign special team players during free agency
Retaining special teams players has been an early theme of free agency for the Cowboys. One of the team’s first moves was getting long-snapper Trent Sieg to rejoin the squad for another three years. Anger works closely with Sieg in two different units — the punt game and then when holding place kicks.
Then there is KaVontae Turpin, who will be making $6 million per year over the next three seasons. Turpin is now the highest-paid special teams player in the league but is also looking for an increased role in the offense as a wide receiver.
Fan favorite kicker Brandon Aubrey is already locked up in a deal, entering the final season of a three-year contract. Dallas will worry about him next offseason as a restricted free agent. Given the recent commitment to special teams, seeing Aubrey leave the Cowboys is difficult.
The immediate future of the entire group appears to be in good hands under newly hired special teams coordinator Nick Sorensen. Dallas is handing out contracts with considerable numbers to multiple guys, hoping to have an advantage over teams out there moving forward.
